The term O-Sensei is a Shogo. Shogo refers to the various teaching “titles” used in the martial arts. The better known titles are: Sensei, Shihan, Shinan, Tashi, Renshi, Kyoshi and Hanshi. Above having advanced knowledge of a system a martial artist is thus recognised with these titles for their teaching level.

The term “O-Sensei” often refers to Morehei Ueshiba of Aikido but may be used for other martial artists. The title translates to “Great Teacher”.
