The term Shinan is a “Shogo” or title.

Shinan is the name or title of the highest instructor within a style. It is typically bestowed upon those with a minimum rank of Rokkudan, 6th dan. It is an honorific. Those holding the title may still be called by other titles that would be appropriate for the specific situation such as: Shihan or Sensei.
