The term Renshi is a “Shogo” or title. These are typically honorific and refer specifically to teaching titles.

In empty hand arts Renshi typically refers to someone who understands the principles of the system. This is typically someone in a teaching position above 4th dan. However, it can be awarded at any black belt level to those showing exemplary behavior and attitude who may not necessarily be teaching.

In sword arts it refers to those who have practiced and succeeded to show the principle of the sword and have good knowledge.
